Crawford County girl gets Outstanding Leadership Award in Iowa State Fair queen competition

Brigid Bonner of Crawford County was given the Outstanding Leadership Award at the 2026 Iowa State Fair queen competition.
Belle Werner of Tama County was crowned this year's queen out of a field of 103 contestants advancing from local county competitions, according to a news release. Jillian Dammann of Page County was the first runner-up in the 2026 Iowa State Fair queen competition. The second-runner up was Jillian Hanson of Benton County, and Eliza Schmidt of Dallas County was named third runner-up.
Anita Marie Scholten of Warren County was given the Personality Plus Award. Allison Gruntmeir of Lee County received the Queen Alumni Award in honor of Julie Wolterman, the release states.

Werner will reign over next year's Iowa State Fair and received a crown, sash, trophy and a $3,000 scholarship along with several other prizes.
Dammann — the daughter of daughter of Justin and Jennifer Dammann — received a $1,500 scholarship and $300 gift card, the release states. Bonner received an $800 scholarship and a $250 gift card.
The release states that judging for the Iowa State Fair queen contest is based on personality, attitude, awareness, leadership, citizenship, contributions to the community, overall appearance, charm and poise.
Western Iowa Power Cooperative receives over $1.4M for repairs

U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley recently celebrated investments from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to Iowa communities, including more than $1.4 million to a Denison-based cooperative.
The Western Iowa Power Cooperative received a FEMA award of $1,469,578.33 for repairs to damage caused by severe winter storms in 2025, according to a news release.
"During the incident period, a severe winter storm caused damage to Western Iowa Power Cooperative’s power distribution system across multiple townships," the release stated.
More than $7.7 million was awarded in Iowa, including to the cities of Davenport, Kellogg, Spencer and Rock Valley as well as the Iowa Department of Transportation, Lyon County Fair Association and Grand Avenue Community Outreach in Spencer.
“In the face of damaging storms, Iowans have always pushed forward to repair and rebuild,” Grassley said in the release. "I’m glad to see these federal dollars coming to communities across our state so the people of Iowa can continue building a stronger future."
