Attorneys have told a federal appeals court they are close to an agreement  that could temporarily maintain government requirements for preventive health insurance coverage. Friday's filing at the appeals court in New Orleans says attorneys for both sides hope to have an agreement by Tuesday. A federal judge in Texas ruled in March that some of the preventive care insurers must provide under the 13-year-old Affordable Care Act are unconstitutional. The preventive care affected includes coverage of HIV-preventing drugs and some cancer screenings. The agreement could keep the mandates largely in place while appeals play out.

A committee of the Maine Legislature has signed off on a proposal from Democratic Gov. Janet Mills that would give the state one of the least restrictive abortion laws in the country. Maine’s current laws allow abortions until a fetus becomes viable, which is generally considered to be about 24 weeks. The governor’s proposal would change state law to allow abortion after fetal viability if it’s deemed necessary by a physician. Democrats control the state Legislature and its committees, and used that advantage to pass the bill through a judiciary committee on Friday. The measure could make it to the Maine House of Representatives as soon as next week.

Social media users shared a range of false claims this week. Here are the facts: Italy has not launched a “Family Pride Month” as a counterpoint to events celebrating the LGBTQ+ community. Videos show fire officials burning part of a forest in Canada to curb the spread of a wildfire; they don't show the wildfire being started. There is no substantiation for a claim being recirculated by a conspiracy theory film that a medication killed more AIDS patient than the disease itself. Pfizer didn't “funnel” $12 million to CNN's Anderson Cooper to promote vaccines, contrary to a widespread claim.

Silvio Berlusconi's doctors say the former Italian premier was admitted to a Milan hospital for planned medical checks related to his chronic leukemia. Berlusconi’s doctors said in a statement on Friday that the tests being conducted at San Raffaele Hospital had been moved up “as part of normal practice in medicine.” They said that the timing didn't signal “any criticality or alarm.” The 86-year-old media mogul and former three-time premier spent 45 days being treated for a lung infection and chronic leukemia at San Raffaele Hospital before being discharged exactly three weeks ago.
