In the tough times of 2020, I’ve found myself drawn to nonfiction that made me look at the familiar in a different way. I’ve collected my favorite 15 books of the year here (technically, two were published in 2019, but I didn’t get around to reading them until this year). The first 14 are in random order, followed by my pick for the best nonfiction book of the year. Bonnie Tsui, “Why We Swim.” ...

Hawkeye, Hot Lips, Trapper John and most of the other favorites from this hit TV series began life first in the novel by Richard Hooker and then in Robert Altman’s Best Picture nominee for 1970. ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ (2014): A sense of fun has not always been evident in Marvel movies, but it’s all over my favorite, powered by the wide-eyed charisma of Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, the I-get-no-respect Rodney Dangerfield of heroes. It’s the loosest MCU movie, the funniest and arguably the one that is least concerned with how it fits with the others. “Guardians” characters have been integrated into the other films but they’re at their best in this entry, where they let their freak flags fly.

That is, of course, a testament to the talent and range of the stars — Thede, Ashley Nicole Black, Quinta Brunson and Gabrielle Dennis — who exemplify the revolutionary possibilities of a show that includes more than one (token) funny Black woman.
