Industrial gas facility in Denison seeks permit renewal

An industrial gas facility in Denison is seeking a renewal of its Title V operating permit from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
Nippon Sanso Matheson Inc. at 2510 Wescott Road submitted an application for a renewal, and public comment is being accepted through Saturday, according to a news release. Title V operating permits are revised every five years. They are issued for facilities that can emit large amounts of air pollution.
Nippon Sanso Matheson, formerly known as Continental Carbonic Products., is a manufacturer and distributor of dry ice and liquid carbon dioxide. The facility is located adjacent to The Andersons Marathon Holdings LLC, formerly known as Anderson Denison Ethanol, and it takes a portion of the exhaust stream of the fermenters as the source of the carbon dioxide it requires, diverting it from atmospheric release.

The Denison facility has the potential to release particular matter, volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide and hazardous air pollutants, according to an Iowa DNR public notice. The initial determination is to renew the permit.

USDA celebrates nutrient recovery center in Woodbine

The first of two nutrient recovery centers in Southwest Iowa opened last month in Woodbine.
U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development Iowa State Director Mike Sexton participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Natural Fertilizer Products Inc., which is turning food and livestock waste into natural fertilizer, according to a news release.
The Harrison County Rural Electric Cooperative said the facility is at 3173 220th St. in Woodbine and held a ribbon0cutting ceremony July 31.
“For Harrison County, this matters because fertilizer cost, nutrient efficiency, soil health, local jobs, agriculture, and rural infrastructure are all connected," Natural Fertilizer Services Inc.'s founder Abe Sandquist said in a statement from the cooperative.

USDA Rural Development is investing $3.9 million into the Woodbine facility and another near Audubon, the release states. The composting facilities recycle food waste, manure from livestock operations, and yard and wood trimmings
“USDA is focused on making fertilizer more accessible and affordable,” Sexton said in a news release. “USDA is helping to rebuild America's fertilizer manufacturing base, strengthen supply chains, and ensure America’s farmers have access to affordable crop inputs to help them compete in the world marketplace.”
