Daniel Johnson is a professor in the Department of Geography at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis. He has studied heat waves for 20 years.Johnson states experts are expecting this year to be one of the hottest years on record, if not the hottest year on record. One reason this year is hotter than others is because of the effects of the El Niño southern oscillation. This is contributing to higher temperatures and the record breaking heat of July 3rd and July 4th of this year, which were globally the warmest days on record. However, El Niño is expected to be even more pronounced in 2024, so next year could be even hotter than this year.
