The Trump administration is expected to begin accepting refund claims for tariffs that US President Donald Trump collected unlawfully. In a court filing, US Customs and Border Protection announced it has completed the initial phase of the refund system, known as CAPE. This system will group refunds, so importers receive a single electronic payment, including interest if applicable, instead of processing separate refunds for each entry. The refund claims the government said it can start accepting amount to about $127 billion of the $166 billion it collected in tariffs. It comes after a February US Supreme Court decision that found Trump exceeded his authority in imposing sweeping global tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. Over 3,000 lawsuits have been filed in the trade court by companies seeking refunds. The Supreme Court left it to the trade court to determine how importers would get their money back.
