Baker Mayfield was the standout performer of Week 1, as he carved up the Commanders’ defense en route to completing 80% of his passes and throwing four touchdowns. The Lions are excellent all-around but still looked vulnerable in the secondary and needed overtime to get past the Rams.
Any team playing the Browns will have a chance to cover simply because of the poor quarterback play of Deshaun Watson. The 28-year-old barely completed more than half of his passes, averaged 3.8 yards per attempt and threw two picks, while Trrevor Lawrence and the Jags moved the ball well despite blowing what should have been a win against Miami.
The Niners dominated the Jets in every way, including overpowering their vaunted defense without Christian McCaffrey. Sam Darnold had a tremendous Week 1 for the Vikings, but is due for regression against a stellar defense. Plus we don’t trust Minnesota’s defense to slow down Brock Purdy and Co.Â
Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb are going to get better as the weeks progress, and the defense is already playing at a high level after it held the Browns to 230 total yards and 17 points. The Saints scored more points than any team in Week 1 but are taking a huge leap going from the Panthers to the Cowboys.
Jayden Daniels already looks like more of a playmaker than Daniel Jones, who tossed two picks in his opener despite him struggling to get on the same page as his receivers early in Week 1. Both defenses are terrible, but the Commanders have a higher offensive ceiling (and probably, a higher floor).
Joe Burrow repeatedly flexed his wrist and looked uncomfortable during an unexpected loss to the Patriots, who were 9.5-point favorites. The Chiefs run the NFL and already beat the Ravens before they were treated to a long week of rest, which, on top of being at home, puts them in as favorable of a position as they can be in an NFL game.
There’s no shame in losing to the defending back-to-back Super Bowl champions on the road, and the Ravens now have a great opportunity to bounce back. They’re flat-out better than the Raiders in every area, particularly on offense, where Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry clearly take precedence over Gardner Minshew and Zamir White.
Isaiah Likely was Jackson’s favorite target in Week 1 as Mark Andrews appears to have been relegated to the second tight end on the depth chart. Likely got 12 targets and caught nine passes for 111 yards and a touchdown and almost had the game-winning score, except his big toe crossed the out-of-bounds line in the back of the end zone.
Minshew might not be an MVP candidate, but he’s capable of moving the ball down the field. He threw for 257 yards in Week 1 and will likely have to air the ball out to keep pace with Baltimore if they jump out to a lead as we expect them to. It’s also worth noting that the Ravens lost several key pieces of their defense during the offseason and allowed Patrick Mahomes to throw for 291 yards on just 28 attempts in Week 1.
