Adeline Lovell was a healthy child until she developed a fever at the age of 4. A local doctor suspected it might be linked to an ear infection and prescribed medication, but the fever returned, accompanied by a rash that her parents attributed to swimming in a lake. Concerned, they took her to her pediatrician, Dr. Kristin Avery, a family friend and former resident at University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Avery identified Adeline’s rash as petechiae—tiny red dots that can indicate leukemia. The family quickly traveled to the hospital, where Adeline was diagnosed with high-risk acute lymphoblastic leukemia, an aggressive cancer affecting the blood and bone marrow. She began chemotherapy but later experienced anaphylaxis as a reaction to the treatment.
Fortunately, the nursing team assisted her breathing, and her care team adjusted her treatment to leg injections. Adeline’s cancer is now considered in remission, and her chemotherapy is set to conclude this fall.
